Bond Boots fitting guide

How a cowboy boot should fit

A boot has no laces, so the leather has to hold your foot in four places. Measure once, check those four places when the box arrives, and exchange the size free within 30 days if it's wrong.

  1. Instep: snug. The top of your foot should feel held, like a firm handshake. Pulling the boot on takes a firm tug and you may hear a soft pop as your heel drops in. If your foot slides forward when you walk, the instep is too loose.
  2. Ball: at the widest point. The ball of your foot should sit where the boot is widest. Snug is fine; pinching or pressure on the little toe means you need Wide.
  3. Heel: a little slip. Expect your heel to lift about ¼ to ½ inch when new. The stiff leather sole hasn't flexed yet; slip settles as it breaks in. No slip at all usually means the boot is too short.
  4. Toe: room to wiggle. Your toes should move freely and never touch the end. On the snip toes (Margaret, Thistle) the extra length in front is styling, not room for your toes.

Measure your foot

  1. Measure in the evening, wearing the socks you'll wear with boots. Feet are largest at the end of the day.
  2. Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall and trace around your foot, pen held straight up.
  3. Measure heel to longest toe in inches or centimeters. Measure both feet and use the longer one.
  4. Enter the length below. Then check the width: if regular-width dress shoes press on the sides of your foot, choose Wide.

Breaking them in

  • Wear them inside first. Walk on carpet for a few evenings. Unworn boots with clean soles can still be exchanged.
  • Give the sole a week or two. The veg-tan leather outsole flexes with wear and heel slip shrinks as it does.
  • Suede styles stretch a little more than calfskin. Choose the snug size if you're between two.
  • Still wrong? Exchange within 30 days, unworn and in the original box.
